Overview
 
This workshop will introduce the participant  to the basics of drawing realistic portraits using the graphite pencil medium.  It will include demonstrations and examples of both feature studies and completed portraits.  Each participant will complete the study drawing shown below.
 
Materials (Available at JoAnn's Store)
 
-  Two #2 Graphite Pencils
-  Artist's Stump - Medium Size
-  Pencil Sharpener - Manual or Battery
-  Blue Reusable Adhesive
-  Erasing Shield
-  White Plastic Eraser (Square or Retractable Click Style)
-  Small Brush (1" or so for removing debris from drawings)
-  Artist's Clipboard or Piece of Foam Board (For use as a drawing surface)
 
Project Kit (Provided by Instructor)
 
-  Practice and Project Drawing Paper
-  Illustrated Step-by-Step Instructions
-  Reference Photo
-  Two Value Viewers
-  1/2" Grid Mylar Overlay (Can be used for future drawings)
 
The Workshop Session will cover the following areas:
 
-  Examples of graphite and colored pencil portraits will be displayed
-  Proportion and placement of facial features
-  Use of stumps and tortillons in producing realistic shading of skin tones
-  Use of value to create the illusion of solidity, contour and depth of portrait subjects
-  Methods of transferring images to the final drawing surface
-  Drawing from photo references
-  Drawing the workshop project
