Drawing Workshops

Workshops are a fun, inexpensive way to learn and grow in the avocation of drawing.  They are typically of short duration and allow one-on-one coaching from an instructor.  Whether you are just beginning to draw or are wanting to explore specific techniques, mediums or subject matter, a workshop gets you headed in the right direction.

Most workshops result in the participant creating a piece of art they can take home with them.  Although there is often not enough time to complete the project during the session, enough instruction and materials are given to allow completion on your own.  To the right is one such  project from a colored pencil workshop I recently attended.

From an instructor's viewpoint, workshops allow the opportunity to share our love of the craft with others.  Many artists are self-taught, beginning with doodling, reading instructional books and attending workshops.  It is not necessary to be enrolled in a formal art school or college to get started creating art of which you can be proud.

In the coming months, I will be conducting several drawing workshops in conjunction with the "Creative University" program at the Joann's Store in Fairbanks.  Dates and times are listed in the individual workshop tabs in this section.

The Introduction to Drawing Workshop is a new artist's class and will cover the absolute basics of creating realistic art using the graphite pencil.  A full description of the workshop is available on the Introduction to Drawing Workshop page in this section.

The Introduction to Colored Pencil Workshop provides instruction for using professional artist's grade colored pencils (used in the orange slice picture above) and an opportunity to complete a colored pencil drawing.  A description of this workshop can be found on the Introduction to Colored Pencil tab.

A third workshop introduce budding artists to creating portraits.  Portraiture is often the first subject drawing students want to learn.  Check the Introduction to Portraiture tab for details.

Advanced instruction in these as well as other subject areas is available from the artist.  Other often-requested subjects:  Perspective Drawing - For those interested in landscape and architectural drawing.   Composition - The process of choosing which objects to include (and which to omit) in a piece and how to arrange them.  It also addresses the issues of light, intensity values and color choices in creating a pleasing finished piece.  Basic Color Theory - Introduces the principles and characteristics of color, use of the color wheel and its use in creating rich, vibrant drawings in a color medium.  Suggestions for other future topics are always welcome.  Let's explore them together!
